In this member spotlight, we celebrate one of our own NAAAP Tampa member whom has transformed professional setbacks into stepping stones, building bridges across communities while establishing himself as a leader in the Greater Tampa Asian American & Pacific Islander network.
A Fresh Start in Unfamiliar Territory
When Evan first arrived in Sarasota from Las Vegas, he carried years of established marketing experience and a successful career foundation. What he didn't anticipate was how challenging it would be to rebuild his professional identity in an entirely new environment. As Evan reflected on that pivotal time, "I suddenly found myself starting over in a new environment, without a strong network or familiarity with the community."
The transition from the established business networks of Las Vegas to the Gulf Coast presented unexpected obstacles. In Vegas, he had spent years cultivating relationships, understanding market dynamics, and building the kind of professional reputation that opens doors. In Florida, those connections were gone, and he faced the daunting task of proving himself all over again.
"At times, it felt like I was hitting dead ends," he recalls. But rather than letting these setbacks define his trajectory, he made a conscious decision to focus on what he could control: consistency, adaptability, and creating his own opportunities rather than waiting for them to materialize.
Building Success Through Strategic Persistence
As a Marketing Communications Director at DMSI, he understood that success in a new market required more than just transferring existing skills—it demanded a complete reimagining of his professional approach. He committed to showing up consistently, even when initial efforts didn't yield immediate results. This persistence began to pay dividends as he gradually built meaningful connections and grew into his leadership role.
His marketing expertise became the foundation for creating projects that made an impact not just within DMSI, but throughout the larger community. By leveraging his communications background, he began to identify opportunities where his skills could serve broader purposes, ultimately leading to the community leadership role he holds today.
"Over time, I built meaningful connections, grew into my leadership role, and created projects that made an impact—not just within my company, but also in the larger community," he explains. This evolution from individual contributor to community leader illustrates how professional setbacks can become catalysts for broader influence and impact.
Lifting Others Through Cultural Leadership
Central to his philosophy is the belief that "lifting others up is the best way to grow, both professionally and personally." This principle guided his involvement with two organizations that have become cornerstones of his community engagement: the Gulf Coast Filipino American Chamber of Commerce and the Filipino American Society Inc.
Through these organizations, he has been able to connect Filipino professionals across the region, celebrate their shared heritage, and advocate for better representation in local business communities. His marketing background proved invaluable in these efforts, as he helped organize community initiatives that not only strengthened cultural bonds but also created professional opportunities for members.
"Organizing community initiatives not only gave me a stronger sense of purpose, but also led to leadership opportunities, deeper relationships, and a stronger professional network," he notes. This dual impact—personal fulfillment and professional advancement—demonstrates how authentic community service can accelerate career growth while creating lasting value for others.
The Strategic Power of Authentic Networking
His experience as a Marketing Communications Director has taught him that networking is about more than collecting business cards—it's about building genuine relationships that create mutual value. "I've met many people through networking—some have led to great collaborations, and sometimes I've even connected others to help them collaborate," he explains.
This approach to networking has been particularly effective in his role, where understanding diverse perspectives and building bridges between different communities has become essential to his success. His ability to connect people and facilitate collaborations has not only enhanced his own professional reputation but has also contributed to a more connected and supportive business ecosystem in the region.
The relationships he's built through consistent, authentic engagement have opened up new opportunities and helped him grow both personally and professionally. More importantly, they've created a network of mutual support that extends far beyond traditional professional boundaries.
Finding Purpose in NAAAP Tampa Membership
His decision to join the National Association of Asian American Professionals reflected a desire to be part of something larger than his individual career trajectory. "I wanted to be part of a group that represents the Asian American community. I wanted to learn from other members and leaders, gain more knowledge, and expand my connections," he explains.
For someone who had already established himself in other community organizations, joining NAAAP represented an opportunity to broaden his impact while deepening his own professional development. The organization has provided him with access to a national network of Asian American professionals, offering perspectives and opportunities that complement his local community involvement.
"Being part of NAAAP has already helped me grow and feel more supported in my journey," he reflects. This sense of support and belonging has been particularly valuable for someone who understands the challenges of starting over in a new community.
From Member to Community Leader
Today, he serves as an example of how professional setbacks can be transformed into community assets. His journey from newcomer to established leader demonstrates that success isn't just about personal achievement—it's about creating conditions for others to succeed as well.
His marketing expertise, combined with her personal experience of rebuilding in a new environment, has made him particularly effective at helping other Asian American & Pacific Islander professionals navigate their own transitions. He understands both the challenges and the strategies that work, having lived through the process himself.
Through his involvement with multiple organizations and his continued professional success, he has created a model for how individual resilience can become collective strength. His story illustrates that the most meaningful career growth often comes not from avoiding challenges, but from embracing them as opportunities to serve others.
A Legacy of Connection and Growth
As he continues to build his career and expand his community involvement, his impact extends far beyond his individual achievements. He has become a bridge-builder, connecting professionals across cultural and industry lines while creating opportunities for meaningful collaboration and mutual support.
His journey from Las Vegas to leadership in Tampa Bay's Asian American & Pacific Islander community demonstrates that professional setbacks can become the foundation for even greater success when approached with resilience, authenticity, and a commitment to serving others. For current and future NAAAP members, his story serves as both inspiration and roadmap for turning challenges into opportunities for growth and community building.
Through his example, he shows that the path from professional setback to community leadership isn't just about personal recovery—it's about creating the kind of supportive, connected environment that makes such transformations possible for others. In a region as dynamic as Tampa Bay, his contributions continue to create ripple effects that benefit the entire Asian American & Pacific Islander professional community.
